The Cubs somehow rallied to salvage the weekend series with the Angels, winning 12-1 behind a strong effort from Carlos Zambrano at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Big Z allowed just 1 run in 7 innings pitched to pick up his 3rd win of the season. Zambrano scattered 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7. Andrew Cashner and Carlos Marmol pitched scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th to preserve the win.
The Cubs racked out a season-high 18 hits after getting just 2 the day before in a 12-0 shutout. Ryan Theriot led the way with 3 hits and 3 runs scored. Derrek Lee added 2 hits and 4 RBI’s. Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, Jeff Baker, Xavier Nady and Zambrano also added 3 hits a piece. The Cubs only hit 1 home run by Geovany Soto and they capitalized on several Angels’ errors as 3 of the 8 runs scored against starter Joe Saunders were unearned.
Now the Cubs travel to Seattle to take on Milton Bradley and the Mariners from Tuesday through Thursday. Then it’s back to Chicago to close out inter-league play with a 3-game set against the White Sox on the south side over the weekend…
