Dave Otto & Keith Moreland Finalists to Replace Ron Santo in WGN Cubs Radio Booth Alongside Pat Hughes — Wrigley Field 2/1/11

Posted on 01 February 2011 by Lou

WGN Radio has announced that Dave Otto and Keith Moreland are the 2 finalists to replace Cubs legend Ron Santo in the radio booth along side Pat Hughes for all Cubs games.  Both Otto and Moreland are former Cubs players.

Otto has already played a role with WGN Radio over the last few seasons, filling in for Santo when he has not traveled with the team on road trips or when he has had to miss games because of illness.

Moreland has subbed for Bob Brenly on TV broadcasts when he has gone on vacation.

My pick is Otto.  I think he adds a great touch on the radio in broadcasts to which I have already listened in the past.  He has a lot of good insight and as a former pitcher, he offers a unique way of looking at the game.

Cubs Convention This Weekend!

Posted on 16 January 2010 by Lou

The Cubs Convention is going on this weekend in Chicago at the Hilton Chicago.  Passes for the convention are sold out, but supposedly there is still home hotel room availability for the weekend.  If you have a room, you can buy up to 4 passes per room for the weekend.

The opening ceremonies to the 2010 Cubs Convention kicked off on Friday night from 5-5:30PM.  There were a few other activities on Friday, but the real action begins in earnest today.  You’ll get to meet the Ricketts Family in person and you’ll get to mingle with current Cubs players (Derrek Lee, Carlos Zambrano, Carlos Marmol, Ryan Theriot, Ryan Dempster) and former Cubs players (Ernie Banks, Andre Dawson, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, Milt Pappas, Dave Otto), as well as the team’s coaching staff (Lou Pinella, Larry Rothschild) and broadcasting teams (Bob Brenly, Len Kasper, Pat Hughes and Santo).

Gotta love it – what a perfect way to get geared up for the upcoming 2010 Cubs schedule at Wrigley Field…

Ron Santo, Cubs, WGN Reach Radio Deal Extension

Posted on 16 December 2009 by Lou

Ron Santo fans – you have reason to celebrate – WGN and Santo have agreed upon an extension that will keep Santo broadcasting on the radio through 2012.  Santo has diabetes and has dealt with the ramifications of his disease while missing time periodically to deal with those medical issues that arise from time to time.  WGN will still work with Santo during those times of.  Pat Hughes will still call the games, while former Cubs pitcher Dave Otto will continue to fill in for Santo when he is not able to make certain broadcasts.  Santo will be 70 in February, but is thrilled to be able to keep calling Cubs games for the foreseeable future.  “I go nuts when I can’t be at the games, but I have to think about my family and my health… So, if I’m not feeling well or I get wiped out, I’ll take cretain days off and WGN has no problem with that… I’m feeling good and I’m on a real good program now where I’m on a stationary bike, and my wife got me a special chair that I can do sit-ups in.”  Yippee – gotta love listening to a Hughes/Santo broadcast – doesn’t get much better than that…
